theory of clouds

a discourse on Art and Urbanism in Kobe

About

The arts initiative “theory of clouds” was formed in 2008. Born from an earlier effort, the
Research Studio for Art and New Media (RSANM), the goal of this current initiative is to participate with other organizations in the enhancement of civic life through sponsorship of the arts. We work to build collaboration across regions and between diverse practices through the support and promotion of special projects. In addition we assist with or directly develop knowledge bases and archives of collaborative projects in the arts and new media for the purpose of providing documentation of and support for interdisciplinary and cross boundary collaboration.

In support of these goals, “theory of clouds” has begun planning a series of events and projects intended to create the opportunity for members of the arts communities from Europe and the Americas to learn more about and engage with artists local to the Kansai. These engagements will take shape in the form of discussions and projects that develop collaboration, support learning, and promote understanding of the ways in which artistic practices are engaging aspects of civic life.

At the core of our program is a partnering between mediamatic.net and theory of clouds. In 2009 mediamatic .net (based in the Netherlands), will begin Mediamatic Travel. This effort will facilitate trips to the world’s contemporary cultural scenes. Mediamatic Travel will connect local actors in the arts to professionals visiting from abroad. Their goal is to enhance visibility and promote collaboration. Theory of Clouds will host Mediamatic Travelers to Kobe and the Kansai. With the assistance of C.A.P., and other arts organizations as well as local artists we will facilitate meetings, studio tours and assist in support of collaborations between artists.

As an organization we share the interests and goals of Mediamatic and we are delighted to partner with them in this effort. We are also
very grateful for the vital assistance we are receiving from C.A.P. Their generosity and commitment to the arts community has proved
fundamental to our program.
